Some kinds of work are charged a flat fee each time you run them; everything else is metered, so you are only charged for what you actually use. Either way, credits come out of your balance as the work runs.

How experiment holds work
When an experiment starts, we set aside an estimate of the credits it may need. While those credits are held they are not available to spend elsewhere, and they are drawn down as the experiment actually runs. If you leave auto-extend on and a run uses up everything that was set aside, it keeps going by drawing more credits from your balance; with auto-extend off, the run pauses instead — so it never quietly spends beyond what you reserved. Anything left over is released back to your balance when the experiment concludes.
